Public Safety Cadets
The Public Safety Cadet program is open to young adults between the ages of 14 and 20. Cadets must join the program prior to reaching their 18th birthday, The mission of the Public Safety Cadet program is to mentor young adults to serve their communities by providing knowledge, skills and practical experiences through education and training delivered by public safety professionals that develops character, physical fitness, and respect for the rule of law and human and civil rights.
Responsibilities
Public Safety Cadets are involved in training sessions on a weekly basis which familiarizes the members with all aspects of law enforcement, including patrol procedures, traffic stops, arrest procedures, traffic and criminal law, criminal investigations, traffic crash investigations and firearms safety. Training is reinforced during annual local and state competitions, attended by the Miramar Public Safety Cadets.
Engagement
The city of Miramar and community organizations call upon the Public Safety Cadets to assist with traffic direction and parking control at events. Public Safety Cadets are not used in assignments requiring police authority but are used to assist the community and police department under the direction and supervision of police department employees. The program brings the cadet into direct contact with members of the Police Department through details, meetings, and the ride along program.
In recent years, the Miramar Police Department has hired several individuals as police officers who received their first exposure to law enforcement through an explorer or cadet program.
