If you are like most people, you want to make sure that your loved ones are adequately provided for should something happen to you. The City provides basic term life insurance at no cost to the employee. Additionally, employees, who do not smoke, will also be eligible for an additional $20,000 benefit at no cost. The cost and level of benefits is dependent on the collective bargaining agreement covering the employee, employee status (e.g. full-time, part-time) as well as ordinances, and Civil Service Rules (Municipal Code).

Voluntary Life Insurance

Voluntary Life Insurance offers coverage for you, your spouse or your child(ren) at different benefit levels. Eligible newly hired employees may purchase voluntary employee life insurance without having to go through Medical Underwriting, also known as Evidence of Insurability (EOI), up to the Guaranteed Issue amount of $50,000. Units can be purchased in increments of $10,000, not to exceed a maximum of $500,000.

Voluntary Spouse Life Insurance

Eligible newly hired employees may purchase voluntary spouse life insurance without having to go through Medical Underwriting, also known as Evidence of Insurability (EOI), up to the Guaranteed Issue amount of $25,000. Employees must participate in the employee voluntary plan for spouse to participate.

Dependent Child(ren) Life Insurance

Employees must participate in the employee voluntary plan for dependent children to participate.

For eligible unmarried children, from birth up to age 20, or up to age 24 if a full-time student, you can select from 3 benefit amounts:
Option 1: $1,000
Option 2: $5,000
Option 3: $10,000

Beneficiary Designation

Life insurance proceeds are payable for death from any cause to the beneficiaries. Employees can designate or very easily update the beneficiaries on-line. It is important to keep beneficiary forms updated.

Long Term Disability Insurance

At no cost to benefit eligible employees, the City provides Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance, which pays you a percentage of your gross monthly earnings if you become disabled due to illness or a non-work related injury.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment

At no cost to the employee, the City provides Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, which pays in addition to the Basic Term Life benefit when death occurs as a result of an accident. The AD&D benefit amount is equivalent to the Basic Term Life benefit.
