Africa Umoja | South African Dance and Drum Workshop

Africa Umoja celebrates the history of indigenous South African music and dance bringing an enriched cultural experience for all ages. In addition to the live performances of the musical, cast members will present an interactive learning experience for students of all levels. The dance and drumming workshops teach the intricate patterns of the Gum Boot Dance and the Venda Snake. Dance along with the rudiments and rhythms of drumming followed by a discussion on the historical and social role of music, dance and art in South African culture.

Celebrating 50 years of excellence, the renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem will offer a master class for all dance levels from beginner to professional. The master class will include: 

  • A ballet warm up
  • Center work  
  • Across-the-floor movement

The Dance Theatre of Harlem Company tours nationally and internationally, presenting a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The 17-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate African American culture. Through performances, community engagement and arts education, the Company carries forward Dance Theatre of Harlem’s message of empowerment through the arts for all.
