UNITY360 “What’s Going On: Marvin Gaye’s America” Race Dialogues

During Black History Month, the Miramar Cultural Trust partners with South Florida People of Color for a FREE series of discussions and workshops addressing ways in which race, racism and prejudice shape our society and impact our daily interactions.

The dialogue pairs a carefully selected reading, White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide by Dr. Carol Anderson, with a facilitated discussion and workshop designed to identify and deconstruct barriers to inclusion across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic boundaries. Participants will have the opportunity to learn skills and techniques designed to facilitate interactions and create a foundation for empathy and understanding between people of different backgrounds.
God Walks with me
The goal of the UNITY360 dialogue is to promote both self-awareness and group awareness of the sometimes-unintended harm of casual racism and bigotry, and provide participants with tools for diffusing and rejecting bigoted language and behaviors when they encounter them, in hopes of improving the quality of social interactions and community life.

Co-Facilitators:
  • Dr. Tameka Hobbs, Miramar Cultural Trust, Author, Democracy Abroad, Lynching at Home: Racial Violence in Florida
  • Jordana Hart, Attorney, Member of South Florida People of Color

Session 1: February 11 at 9 AM
This guided discussion covers topics including the 1950s-70s, Brown vs. Board of Education, urban unrest, and Nixon and Regan's America.

Session 2: February 25 at 9 AM
This facilitated workshop is designed to give participants tools to deal with issues of race, such as reacting to racist remarks and increasing your level of comfort when it comes to issues of race.

The sessions are offered free of charge through a partnership between the
Miramar Cultural Trust and South Florida People of Color.
Registration is required.
